When visiting Oregon, prepare to be impressed by its diverse natural beauty and the ease of traveling throughout the state. You can go from the rugged coastline of the Pacific Ocean to the snowy peaks of Mount Hood with minimal hours for travel. The state is a paradise for nature lovers, with some of the most scenic national parks and protected areas in the country. Whether you're hiking through Crater Lake National Park, exploring the Columbia River Gorge, or discovering hidden waterfalls, Oregon’s outdoor beauty is bound to leave you in awe.

Crater Lake National Park

A must-visit destination for nature lovers, Crater Lake offers stunning views of the deepest lake in the United States. Hike around the rim, go for a boat tour, or enjoy the scenery from various viewpoints.

Portland, the largest city in the state, is a vibrant hub for food, art, and culture. Known for its trendy food trucks, eclectic neighborhoods, and eco-conscious ethos, Portland offers an urban escape with a relaxed vibe. The city is also a great base for exploring the rest of the state, including the iconic Oregon coast.

Spend a day in Portland exploring its farmers and Saturday markets, independent bookstores, and diverse neighborhoods. Whether downtown Portland or across the river in the SE, grab a bite to eat at any of the multiple options provided by food trucks.  With the wide variety available, you can find something delicious for everyone.

Whether you visit the Southwest or Southeast corner of the Willamette River, you'll find trendy places to eat and explore along the river.

Things to Do

There is way too much to see and do to mention all here, but if you're able to take in any one of the places mentioned, you'll have a great time!

  • Portland, The Rose City:  Hike in Forest and Washington Parks and visit Pittock Mansion.  Shop in Knob Hill or Alphabet district and check out the street fairs in the Northend.  Stroll along Portland State University South Blvd to visit the Farmers market and of course don't forget to visit the International Rose Garden.

  • Columbia River Gorge: Drive to the top of Crown Point and hike to some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country, including Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon.

  • Oregon Coast: Explore the beautiful beaches, rock formations, and charming coastal towns. Depending on the time of year Cannon Beach can give off a smoky appearance as the air is impacted when the temperature interacts with the sand and famous Haystack Rock that meet at the river and ocean's edge.  Also, find your way to Newport Beach and enjoy cozy inns for a special relaxing time at the beach.

  • Mount Hood: Whether you’re skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, Mount Hood is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

For a week-long trip to Oregon, you can expect to spend approximately $1,200-$2,500 per person, depending on your travel style.

  • Flights: $300-$500 (round trip from major cities)

  • Accommodations: $80-$250 per night (budget hotels or Airbnb)

  • Food: $50-$80 per day for meals at mid-range restaurants

  • Activities: Entrance fees to national parks ($15-$30), guided tours ($50-$100)

  • Transportation: Renting a car is essential for exploring the state, which can cost $40-$70 per day.  However, getting around Portland can be fairly inexpensive and easy with rides on the trains and trolleys.
